Backpack with padded hip belt - External frame 4000 - 4500 cubic inches (65L - 74L) or greater Internal frame 4800 - 5500 cubic Inches (80L - 90L) or greater**Watch pack weight and consider buying a spare hip belt buckle and other size buckles.**External frame pack folks must bring spare pack pins.

Waterproof pack cover - Make sure it fits your loaded pack including your sleeping pad.

Sleeping bag suitable for 20 degrees is recommended. Synthetic recommended. Must weigh less than 4 pounds. A sleeping bag rated for the mid 30 degree level is acceptable but must be paired with extra warm clothes that are dedicated to sleeping. MUST have a stuff sack and MUST compress to a maximum of 8" x 16". Smaller and lighter is better!! This item will be useful for your whole scouting career and beyond. If you were going to spend a bit more on any item on this list....this is the one.

Waterproof stuff sack or bag for sleeping bag. Can be an oven bag inside of the stuff sack or a waterproof bag that you put the bag in after it is in the stuff sack.

Closed cell foam or Therma-rest sleeping pad. If inflatable you must have a patch kit.

Optional Inflatable pillow.

Optional closed cell foam / tyvek to sit on. No stools / chairs. No slings to make a sleeping pad into a chair.

Sleeping clothes - Poly long underwear or t-shirt and shorts. Socks. To be used for sleeping only.

Sturdy Hiking boots - waterproof (bring extra laces or can use para cord) You will be carrying 25 to 30% of your body weight (or more). A light hiker (over the ankle) may be enough but a backpacking boot is recommended.

Waterproof Rain suit (jacket and pants) - packable - no PVC or ponchos or all plastic - Gore-Tex is great but not required. Keep in mind that your rain suit can be used as layers to keep warm. A little big is OK but make sure you can secure the pants around your waist without issues.

Squishy or collapsible bowl. Optional squishy or collapsible cup. NOTE: if you plan to use your Nalgene bottle to mix drinks like Gatorade or hot chocolate, it becomes a smellable and must go in the bear bag.

Metal or plastic spoon or spork. No knife or fork will be needed.

Ability to carry 3 to 4 liters of water. Must have at least 1 wide mouth Nalgene - Other options are a hydration bladder, large bottled water bottles. No soda bottles, they are a smellable.

Small container and striker for waterproof matches either in a plastic bag or the container must be waterproof. Include a good striker! You may bring matches on our shakedown trips, but do not bring matches to Philmont. We will purchase and distribute matches when we arrive.
